Derron Cook and Nathan Seven Scott are in Cape Town, South Africa teaching and learning from students the difference between black and coloured. This project is a result of that conversation. Enjoy!!!

What does the Colour Me Beautiful philosophy have to say about the following…? White people in African cloth

White people wearing clothes and patterns that were originally designed for Black Africans?

I’m living in West Africa and am continually struck by how ridiculous some white people look when they try to wear clothes like the local people do, not taking into account the subtle issues which have to be taken into consideration when wearing local attire. When done correctly, they look very well, but my goodness, when they get it wrong, they get it really really wrong. Black Africans rarely if ever get it wrong. Leave that to the white tourists. I’m white myself, I know what I’m talking about. I’d like to hear your views on this, thanks.
Interesting point Doppler about the reverse racism aspect. When volunteers wear African clothes, (I include myself in this) they are careful to dress a mixture of African and European styles. That way, it doesn’t look as odd. I’m talking about people dressing from head to toe, including the wrap around headgear, walking around the markets. Even Gambians snigger at them sometimes. It’s completely different if it is for a special occasion. Then, it’s not a problem.
I get your point though. thanks.
